Slide guitar or Bottleneck guitar is a technique where a Slide is worn on the third or fourth finger. It is lightly pressed against the strings parallel to the frets.

The strings never touch the frets which are now only used for reference. The pitch can then be smoothly changed by moving the slide up and down the neck.

There are many different types of slides to choose from. The most common materials used to make slides are metal, glass, and ceramic.

The material used and the thickness of the slide will have a major impact on the tones produced.

Open Tunings & Slide Guitar

In most cases an Open Tuning is used when playing slide guitar which allows a chord to be played when the strings are strummed unfretted. Playing this chord (usually a major chord) in different keys is then done by moving the slide up and down the neck.

Here are two popular scales for slide guitar, the D major pentatonic in an Open D tuning, and the G major pentatonic in Open G tuning.
