Lead Guitar Techniques | G7 to D7

Here’s a nice little groove that you might find in a funk or jam band situation. Two dominant seventh chords vamping back and forth just waiting for somebody to rock out to.

In this case the chords are D dominant seventh and G dominant seventh. G7 comes from the key of C Major and D7 comes from the key of G Major. The only difference between these two keys would be their “F” notes. In the key of G Major the F is sharped and in the key of C Major it isn’t.

In the jam track below we are using the Mixolydian mode over both chords. This is a common scale to use when jamming over dominant chords because it has a major third and a minor seventh just like the dominant chord. In order to switch scales we only need to move one note. Pretty easy huh?

Have fun rocking out and let me know if this was helpful to you.

Thanks,

Neil
