[lollum_dropcap]W[/lollum_dropcap]hen Eat ‘Em and Smile from David Lee Roth came out in 1986 I was blown away.

I had just seen the movie Crossroads where Steve Vai played the devil’s guitarist and now here he was filling the shoes of my long time idol Eddie Van Halen.

Every track on the CD was amazing to me and I aspired to play just like Steve someday. I’m not there yet but I do know a few things Vai-ish.

In this lesson I’d like to show you a scale sequence that I gleaned from the very beginning of the song “Shy Boy” It is grouped in triplets and is a real barn burner.
