As guitarists we interact with the musical pulse by playing notes. Some are long and some are short.

The diagram below shows the rhythmic breakdown of the notes.

The longest note is on top (the whole note) and the shortest is on the bottom (sixteenth note).

Smaller subdivisions are possible such as 32nd and 64th notes though they are rarely used by mere mortals.

Musical Note Values

The Rests

Every note value has a corresponding rest symbol to go along with it. Rests provide a way to show where silence should appear during a song.
