One String Finger Exercises | 1st Finger

Guitar permutations are simply exercises designed to build dexterity and cooperation between the hands. I’ve often thought of them as tongue twisters for the fingers.

They condition your hands to play what you want, whenever you want, but they are also a great way to warm up your muscles before a gig or practice session.

Below is a series of exercises design to be played on one string. We start by ascending the string playing with one finger per fret, then we move that pattern up the neck. This lesson will focus on all the permutations of this finger pattern that start with the first finger.

Permutation is a mathematical term that refers to the act of rearranging a group of numbers. In part two, three and four of this series of guitar exercises we’ll take a look at all the permutations that start with the other finger.

If you have any questions, concerns, or Haiku leave them in the comments and please help our site grow by sharing this awesome knowledge with others.

Here’s a metronome to help you practice. Take it slow at first then slowly speed up over time. Every once in a while though, try setting it super fast and have fun trying to keep up.

You can do it.
