In this excerpt from a lesson Paul Gilbert did for Guitar Player magazine he demonstrates how a simple lick idea can be expanded and improved upon. Starting with a pretty simple 6 note legato lick in the A minor blues scale (Ex 1), Paul adds one note to it making it more interesting (Ex 2).
Next he adds five more notes to the pattern to create an intuitive feeling legato lick with an 11 note pattern (Ex 3). As if that’s not enough, Paul then adds a few notes ascending and descending the scale creating a 19 note lick (Ex 4). Is that even a thing? I’m not sure but it sounds great.
