Vai Style Backing Track

Here’s a Steve Vai Style Backing Track in E Minor by Vito Astone a high quality original backing track producer from YouTube. I like that his videos show you when each chord is being played so you can adjust your scale choice accordingly.

Scales You Can Use

Here are some scale suggestions for use with this backing track. If you mash the two scales together you can see that it nearly forms the E Natural Minor (Aeolian) Scale.

E Minor Pentatonic

▲12th Fret

You can use the E Minor Pentatonic at the 12th fret over the whole progression and it will work fine, or you could reserve it only for the Emin9 chords.

D Major Pentatonic

▲12th Fret

You could use the C Major Pentatonic at the 12th fret over the C9 chord but I prefer using D Major Pentatonic instead. You end up playing the 9th, 3rd, #4, 5th and 7th  avoiding the C root note completely. It really gives your licks a Lydian sound and makes it easy to create phrases that resolve to E Minor Pentatonic.
