When you’re playing chords it sounds perfectly fine to have barre chord after barre chord jumping around the neck. This is a sound that we hear a lot in rock and pop music so we are used to it.
However if you wanted the sound of your chords to flow smoothly from one to another you would have to give a bit of thought to your Voice Leading.
Each note of a chord is called a voice.
Voice leading is the practice of moving each voice smoothly from one chord to the next.
Using barre chords, inversions, and the CAGED system this can be easily done with a little practice.
Let’s look at a simple progression and a few different ways we could play it.
