D Dorian Lick – Nugget #2

You may know that QuistJam creates great backingtracks on YouTube, but di you know that he can really wail? In this lesson he shows you a fast D Dorian Lick that winds its way up the neck hitting a few chromatic notes along the way. I’ve tabbed it out below. Here’s how Quist describes the lesson:

This phrase is based on D Dorian Mode: D E F G A B C (D)

It starts off on the 2nd note of D Dorian (e), going on to the 3rd (f) and continuing into a Dm7 arpeggio (d f a c d). Then some chromaticism. Note the combination of hammer-ons (h), pull-offs (p) and the slide between 11th and 12th fret on the d-string. Obviously, the c# doesn’t belong in the scale, but it’s quite a common addition in this kind of context… and I like it 🙂

You can of course pick as many notes as you like, or hammer-on/pull-off as many as you like. This is just the way I like it… when you combine legato and picking, it will often give phrases more rhythmic contour – in the same way that phrases from greats like Charlie Parker and John Scofield often have it.

Practice tips:

Make sure to practise it nice and slow at first. Try to always practise IN TIME. If you can tap your foot while you’re playing – and not necessarily looking as silly as I do – you’re definitely onto a good thing 🙂

Make sure the hammer-ons are nice and strong. And finally..choose a good fingering (see mine for ideas) and then stick with it as you build up the speed…..
