Eric Johnson – Hot Licks (Complete video)

Edit: It looks like Youtube took the video down, but believe me when I tell you that it was glorious and I suggest you all go out right now and buy it…and then upload it to Youtube 🙂 jk.

I remember the first time I heard “Cliffs of Dover” by Eric Johnson. It was a stormy Summer day and all the windows were open which let a strong breeze fill the house. The radio was on and a flurry of guitar notes jumped out of the speakers. The sound of it seemed to match the feel of the wind, pushing and pulling the air around the room.

After about a minute later, this mystery guitarist settled into a lick that seemed both new yet familiar. The rest of the song unfolded in much the same way, showcasing Eric’s crisp clear style and super fast precision runs up and down the neck. But it all had the effect of just “sounding right” to me. Like this was one of the most natural ways for a guitar to be played but no one had played it that way before.

In Eric’s full length “Hot Licks” video he discusses his influences, his technique, and his unique sound. I’ve included the tablature PDF below for your practicing pleasure. Enjoy!
