Here is an awesome lesson by the great Shawn Lane where he demonstrates his technique of playing the pentatonic scale using 5 note patterns.
Pay close attention to the way Shawn fingers the scale using his second finger on the single notes at the start of each pattern. This way of playing the pentatonics really opens them up to quick and smooth playing.
