2 Ways to Improve Any Guitar Lick

Tom Hess is so cool man. He sits down with this dude and tweaks his metal guitar lick to the point of awesomeness. By using a couple of ornamental techniques he gives the phrase some character.

Ornamental techniques are to music what accents are to language, two speakers can say the same words and sound very different.

The two ornaments Tom ads are:

[lollum_list_element]Slide: Near the end of the phrase he slides away from the 10th fret and back again creating a sound typical of Sitar music.

[/lollum_list_element]
[lollum_list_element]Semi-tone bend: Before resolving to the last note Tom slowly bends the fret behind it never quite letting the pitch reach the next note. He then strikes the target note full force!

I like how he makes the listener wait for the resolution of the last note. In this way you can get into the psychology of the guitar and play with the audience’s minds.
